FORUM NEWS JUNE 2010
June 2010
FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Forum Members,
As we close the 2009-10 fiscal year and prepare to launch our work together for 2010-11, it is befitting to take stock and reflect on the year's accomplishments.
We dedicated this year to honing our strategic plan to bring all of our efforts into alignment with our newly defined mission and vision. We crafted clear, measurable goals for the board and each committee. And we remained committed to accountability and transparency.
So, here is a brief summary of what we accomplished.
We grew our membership by an additional 70 members from the C-suites and executive ranks of the top businesses and entities influencing the sustainability and growth of our region. Our new members include, among others:
- 5 CEOs of leading companies
- 14 EVPs of major area corporations
- 7 executives working in companies in the pharmaceutical and life science industries
- 2 additional university/college presidents bringing our total university and college Forum president membership total to 11
We deepened our relationships with our targeted list of top companies, entities, and organizations across our market by more than 10 percent, establishing an additional 61 connections with those outlets as we:
- Recruited their top women executives for membership
- Established direct referrals from them to our mentee program (to help them build their pipeline of mid- level women managers ready for advancement)
- Cultivated annual sponsorships from them that reinforce their commitment to leveraging the power of executive women within The Forum and their own organizations to advance the impact and influence of women in leadership
- Co-sponsored four CEO Chats for our members, held at Sunoco, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Tastykake and Campbell Soup
- Facilitated, since February 2010, 21 Forum members for consideration for 15 public company board positions across the country
- Partnered with Vision 2020 as they launch their national women's leadership initiative
It has been a fast-paced and exciting year, and we have indeed advanced our mission. The Forum of Executive Women's annual Women on Boards' research is considered the benchmark for the state of affairs in our region, and The Forum's work is now frequently referenced in public meetings, think tank discussions, and important trade and general press reports. From Mayor Nutter's recent reference to and support of our research initiative when he met with The Forum during our recent day at City Hall to our comments on proposed SEC regulations, which were quoted when the new regulations were issued, The Forum of Executive Women's impact is becoming clear.
Thank you all for your continuing commitment to The Forum and dedication to our mission. And as I have said before, I hope you are realizing your own personal and professional benefits of membership as you connect with other Forum members and participate in our expanding dialogues with the corporate, public service, academic, cultural and social service leaders whose attention we are now drawing.
Enjoy the summer and I look forward to working with you over the next year. Look for my letter in September to hear what's planned by our new board...and check the Web site for details of our continually advancing objectives, strategic initiatives and tactical work!

THE FORUM'S 2010 LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM CELEBRATED THE POWER OF WOMEN
|
|
On April 22, 2010, The Forum held its third annual Leadership Symposium, Step Up - Stand Out: Celebrating The Power of Women!, which featured a powerful interview of Suraya Pakzhad, a recipient of the 2008 International Women of Courage Award, by local radio and television host Tracey Matisak.
Following the opening session, the 185 guests attended one of three panels of inspirational speakers who shared their stories and wisdom celebrating the power of women. The day concluded with a luncheon featuring leaders of two major initiatives working to advance women's leadership over the next decade - The White House Project and Vision 2020: An American Conversation about Women and Leadership. NEW NON-SOLICITATION GUIDELINES
|
|
The Forum Board has developed a non-solicitation policy for members and their guests. Please see the guidelines below:
The Forum of Executive Women seeks to create a positive and professional environment for all members. To support this effort, we have established guidelines to ensure that our members are not openly or aggressively solicited for business by other members or their guests at Forum meetings and events.
The following guidelines have been created to address solicitation issues:
Members and their guests should refrain from leaving promotional materials on meeting tables or openly distributing them during meetings or events unless otherwise stipulated as part of a sponsorship package.
The membership directory is not to be used as a solicitation tool. This means that no member shall undertake a mass mailing campaign using the directory to sell products or services or solicit charitable contributions.
Obviously, members may discuss their services or provide additional information and/or follow up to a prospective client member upon specific invitation or inquiry during meetings or outside of meetings.
Please make every effort to advise your guests of these guidelines prior to attending a meeting.

TRANSITIONS AFFINITY GROUP FORMING
|
|
Four FOEW members (Mona Doyle, Karen Minyard, Joie Smith and Margaret Sadler) are interested in starting an informal affinity group to explore post career changes in our lives. These four women hope to talk about the courage and willingness it takes to let go; the desire/need to keep working; shifting priorities; losing clout and influence and keeping a link with The Forum.
The first meeting will be on June 21 in the evening. If you are a woman of a certain age and can see these changes coming into your life and are willing to talk about them, ask The Forum Office (info@forumofexecutivewomen.com) to put you on the email notification list for the first meeting. Considering that The Forum has been around for more than 30 years, many of our members are ready to explore this sensitive ground.
If you have questions, please contact Margaret Sadler at margaretsadler@verizon.net,

INVITATION TO JOIN THE "DINNER AND A BOOK" AFFINITY GROUP
|
|
This affinity group welcomes members who enjoy good conversation, food and non-fiction business book discussions. The Forum's "Dinner and a Book" Affinity Group is now two years old. Shawn Kent Hayashi was asked by the Engagement Committee to spearhead this Forum initiative. In agreeing to organize these get-togethers, Shawn, the Chief Learning Officer at The Professional Development Group, saw a way to share her own passion for learning and sharing great food with Forum members. The group meets every other month in a different restaurant to discuss a book that was selected by one of the regular attendees. The restaurants tend to be in the western suburbs; however on several occasions the group has met in Philadelphia.
The next "Dinner and a Book" Affinity Group dinner will be held in the fall. Check The Forum's Web site for the date and details. Questions? Please contact Shawn Kent Hayashi at
Shawn@TheProfessionalDevelopmentGroup.com or 215-588-1188.
