Speeches/Publications

Lynn Axelroth, Managing Partner of the Philadelphia Office and Partner in the Real Estate Department at Ballard Spahr Andrew & Ingersoll, LLP, was selected by Aspatore Books as an author for the recently released book targeted to senior level executives, Inside the Minds: Legal Strategies for the Construction Industry. Axelroth, a leader in the field of construction law, authored a chapter titled, “Issues for Owners and Lenders.”   

Robin Bond, Esq., President and CEO, Transition Strategies, Inc., was quoted as a workplace legal expert in two recent articles in The New York Times: November 27, 2005, in the Sunday Business section’s “Career Coach” column on “What to Tell the Company as You Walk Out the Door,” and on December 17, 2005, in a front-page story, “Being a Patient—Sick and Vulnerable, Workers Fear for Health and Their Jobs.”  

Marjorie Brody, President of Brody Communications, released a new book on networking skills in January 2006: You Can't Do it Alone, and spoke during the 2005 "Project World/Business Analyst World Conference" from November 15-18. Topic: "Successful People Are Connected People." Marjorie was also selected chair of all sessions in Track 5—“The People Side of Project Management."
 
Tine Hansen-Turton was author of "The Nurse-managed Health Center Safety Net: A Policy Solution to Reducing Health Disparities," published in January 2006. She was also elected to be a member of the board of the Chestnut Hill Healthcare Foundation and of the People Caring Alliance.

Elayne Howard is presenting a workshop, “Cost Effective, Competitive Marketing Strategies,” at the Maximizing Marketing ROI for Hospitals and Health Systems conference in Las Vegas on March 30, 2006, sponsored by WRG Research, Inc. (www.worldrg.com). Elayne is President of Elayne Howard & Associates, Inc., the health care strategic marketing consulting firm.

Dr. Leslie Mayer, President & CEO of Mayer Leadership Group, taught a session on senior executive development to senior professionals at the Society of Consulting Psychology in February 2006. 

Suzanne S. Mayes, Esq., Partner at Saul Ewing LLP, is organizing and hosting "Ladies First:  2nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Women's Public Finance Forum" to be held Friday, March 10, 2006, at The Rittenhouse Hotel for women professionals from all sectors of the municipal finance industry.

Sherrie R. Savett, Esq., Managing Principal and Chairwoman of the Securities Litigation Department of Berger & Montague, P.C., was recently named a “Super Lawyer,” and one of the Top 50 Pennsylvania Women Super Lawyers, by Philadelphia Magazine. Ms. Savett, a frequent panelist at national conferences on securities and consumer class action litigation, recently spoke in New York at the Practicing Law Institute’s Conference and at the New York City Bar CLE program.    

Dianne L. Semingson, President, DLS International, spoke at the recent Wharton Women in Business 7th Annual Conference on the subject: "Director's Cut: Effecting Change from Inside the Boardroom."

Cynthia Fricke Wollman, Vice President of new business development at CRW Graphics, spoke about "Passion in Business: The Agent of Social Change for the Next Decade," at Cedar Crest College’s Fifth Annual Women in Business Lecture and Award Program last Fall. 

 

Appointments/Elections

Linda Ann Galante, Partner at Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP, was recently named to the Board of Trustees for Saint Joseph's Preparatory School, as well as to the Board of Trustees for the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. 

Pamela Godwin, President, Change Partners, Inc., has been appointed to serve on the Advisory Board of C.H. Briggs, Inc. (in Reading, Pennsylvania), one of the largest independently owned building materials distributors in its industry.  

Barbara J. Gohn, Managing Director of Ashbridge Investment Management, has been named the President of The International Alliance of Women (TIAW). The purpose of TIAW is to encourage, develop, fund and implement programs that foster economic empowerment and advancement for women around the world. TIAW has over 50,000 members across the globe.

Dr. Cathy L. Greenberg, Founding Partner of h2c, was awarded a board seat on The Integrity Institute, founded by former Enron Executive Lynn Brewer. Greenberg was also featured on London’s BBC Network with Dr. Dan Baker about her new book What Happy Companies Know.

Lynn Nowicki, President and CEO of MetroKitchen.com, has been chosen to serve on Wachovia’s Business Banking Customer Advisory Board for a term of 24 months. The board is made up of 25 customers and meets twice a year to provide input into products, processes and services provided by Wachovia.

Carol Parssinen, Senior Vice President, The Franklin Institute, was elected to the Board of The American Poetry Review and co-chaired the APR's 33rd Anniversary Gala, which featured Meryl Streep.

Margaret Sadler, Director of Human Resources, FMC Corporation, was elected Secretary for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Lisette Shirdan-Harris, Administrator for the Laborers' District Council Prepaid Legal Fund, was elected to be Judge of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas starting January 2, 2006.

Bryna S. Silver, Partner, Synnestvedt & Lechner, LLP, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Theatre Company in November 2005. She also serves on the Capital Campaign Committee of Philadelphia Theatre Company, raising funds for the construction of the company’s new theater on the Avenue of the Arts.  

 

Awards/Honors

Mary Stengel Austen, president and CEO of Tierney Communications, was presented with “The Spirit of Life Award” from the City of Hope Cancer Center at a November gala reception honoring her for outstanding business and philanthropic leadership. The Spirit of Life Award is the highest philanthropic honor bestowed by the world-renowned cancer research and treatment facility. 

The Presbyterian Foundation for Philadelphia, and its subsidiary, NewCourtland Elder Services, has awarded a $1 million endowed scholarship to the Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (GPN) master’s program at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing. The Kass Scholarship, named for the Foundation’s and NewCourtland’s current president and CEO, Gail Kass, will provide full tuition to eligible NewCourtland network employees, their children or grandchildren who are accepted to the program. 

Page S. Morahan, Ph.D., Co-Director of Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine, has been selected as a 2006 Fellow by AWIS (Association for Women in Science) for her “exemplary commitment to the achievement of equity for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” She will be honored in February during the annual meeting of AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science). Dr. Morahan was also appointed to the newly formed editorial board of Academic Physician and Scientist, a newsmagazine published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins in collaboration with The Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Karen A. Stout, President of Montgomery County Community College, was recently honored as the 2005 "Exceptional Woman in Education" by the Pottstown YWCA at its annual Tribute to Exceptional Women awards dinner on November 3, 2005. Dr. Stout was selected for the award because of her role in helping other women to reach their personal and professional goals.

 

Business News/Moves

Autumn Bayles, Chief Information Officer of Tasty Baking Company, has been assigned increased responsibility at Tasty Baking with Distribution, Customer Service, and the company’s specialty/e-commerce store TastyShop reporting to her as well as Information Technology. 

Maryalice DeCamp has been Managing Director of the Jefferson Wells' Philadelphia office since January 2005. Her 2005 accomplishments include driving office revenue 58%, improving client satisfaction and increasing client retention. She also became a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and participates in local chapter meetings.

Abbe F. Fletman has joined Flaster/Greenberg as a shareholder and member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Intellectual Property Practice Groups in its recently expanded Philadelphia office. A veteran attorney and partner at Wolf Block Schorr & Solis-Cohen, LLP, for the past eight years, Fletman represents clients in complex litigation and commercial disputes.

Robin Leavitt has relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina to join Wachovia as a Vice President in the Retirement Services business. Robin is responsible for managing a significant book of defined benefit pension business along with marketing total retirement and nonqualified plan programs.   

Molly Raphael, Principal Consultant of Raphael Health Policy and Planning Consulting, received a recognition award by HGS Administrators, a subsidiary of Highmark Insurance Company, as chairperson of the Medicare Oversight Board. Last fall, Ms. Raphael was elected Vice President of the Board of the Maternity Care Coalition, whose mission is to provide access to health care for women and babies. She was also appointed to an advisory panel by Governor Rendell to examine options to expand access to affordable health care coverage as part of a statewide planning process.

Joan Schwartz joined Airgas, Inc. in Radnor, Pennsylvania, as Corporate Counsel on December 1, 2005. She was formerly at Teleflex Incorporated in Limerick, Pennsylvania.

City Cleaning Company, Inc. has been certified by SBA to work in the Hub zone in Philadelphia. Owner and President Georgia Shafia is working on certification from FIMA to open a branch in New Orleans for clean up after the disaster.

Ivy Silver, President of the Commonwealth Consulting Group, Inc., is this year’s Women’s Way Leadership Award Honoree (2006). This award is presented to a business leader who makes service to women and her community a priority.

Patricia D. Wellenbach, was hired by Granary Associates to be the Managing Director of Business Development and Strategic Initiatives. In this new company position, she works directly with the President/CEO and senior management.

 

Community

Lisa Detwiler, Managing Counsel of Lockwood Financial Services, Inc., and Bernie Munley, Partner at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, are co‑chairing the 2006 Go Red for Women event for the American Heart Association at the Franklin Institute on June 12, 2006.

JoAnne Fischer, Executive Director of Maternity Care Coalition (MCC), organized a reception for the Maternal Child Health section leadership of the American Public Health Association in December after their New Orleans meeting was moved to Philadelphia. In September MCC celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a very successful celebration and auction at the Hyatt Regency. Forum members serving on MCC's Board and 25th anniversary committee include Veena Aggarwal, Mary Stengel Austin, Linda McAleer, and Molly Raphael.

Linda Rosanio, CEO of the Star Group, spread holiday cheer to the children of New Orleans with Star client American Christmas, who donated holiday decorations to the Touro Infirmary and the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. She and the Star Group also raised funds to deliver wrapped toys to nearly 100 children in the hospital.
