FORUM NEWS    APRIL 2009

April 2009

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Bankins

It's Spring time!

Welcome to the beginning of spring.  A wonderful time of the year with the trees budding and the beauty of the tulips, daffodils, dogwood and the blooming season just ahead.

The Forum is bursting with all types of activities to help you shake the winter doldrums and get you involved. There is something happening with every committee that you may enjoy. This newsletter provides updates on committee activities, and you can peruse our website or contact one of the Committee Chairs for more information.  We are always looking for fresh ideas and "out of the box" thinking.

We have made it easier for you to become engaged with The Forum by offering smaller venues, including breakfasts and dinners for Forum members only and discounted prices to specific special events in the area. It is all up to you!

Did you know..?  A not-to-be-missed event is the upcoming April 22nd Leadership Symposium.  And the Executive Suites Committee has launched two new initiatives this year, the Women's Speaker Club, to provide inspiring words to emerging women to break through barriers along their desired path, and the Forum Awards Nomination Committee, to ensure that Forum candidates are nominated for visible recognition in our area.  The Program committee has announced a new initiative  -  "Thought Salons" -  discussions facilitated by dynamic discussion leaders on topics of value and interest to our members. If you have ideas for Thought Salon topics, know of discussion facilitators or would be willing to host a Thought Salon in your home, please contact Stefanie Fine or Penny Ellison.

There is so much more happening at The Forum.  This is the time to connect with other Forum members, get to meet other senior women in our area and expand your network!  Our current economic conditions have proven that a strong network of connections and continuous information exchange is critical for successful survival.

I leave you with this quote from Anne Bradstreet ~ "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

Looking forward to seeing you at an upcoming Forum event very soon!

All the best!

Elva

COMMITTEE NEWS

Our committees have been very busy over the last six months developing new programs,  designing exciting initiatives and working to add to the value of your Forum membership.  Please contact one of the committee chairs for more information or if you would like to join a committee.

ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Engagement Committee, co-chaired by Lesley Mallow Wendell and Afaf Meleis, has undertaken several initiatives this year. We are developing a Forum Ambassadors Group to reach out and actively engage new members and eventually serve as a resource for current Forum members seeking advice on a variety of professional and personal development issues.  A special program co-presented by Afaf Meleis and Page Morahan, and focused on managing transitions, is scheduled for April 16.

Members of the committee held a focus group with long-term Forum members to learn more about ways to engage this group.  As a result, we are working closely with the Membership Committee to explore the creation of a Sustaining Member Class to recognize long term members who have provided significant service to The Forum over the tenure of their membership.

Dinner and a Book and Food and Finance, two Affinity Groups formed last year, are actively meeting.

EXECUTIVE SUITES COMMITTEE

The Executive Suites Committee, co-chaired by Autumn Bayles and Lisa Young, is moving along well and has many exciting initiatives underway.   Our goal remains to increase the number of women in the executive suites and, for 2009, we plan to do this through four tenets:

1.  Helping women get on boards.   Under this tenet, we have a search subcommittee that fields requests, our collaboration with the multi-city ION group that works on the macro level and the educational "Women on Boards" report initiative.

2.  Influencing decision makers.   For this tenet, we have a newly revitalized Company Outreach subcommittee and are also testing out the idea of an early adopter pledge concept.

3.  Developing the pipeline of candidates.   Over the years, we have learned that the "leaky pipeline" contributes to the lack of women in executive ranks.   We founded a new initiative this year, the Women's Speaker Club, to help inspire women leaders to break barriers and strive to achieve those ranks.

4.  Marketing successful women.   The committee also realizes that there are good candidates out there who are untapped.   To this end, we added another new cross committee initiative, the Forum Awards Nomination Committee, to ensure that Forum candidates are nominated for visible recognition.

MENTORING COMMITTEE

The Mentoring Committee, co-chaired by Nila Betof and Sara Manzano-Diaz, introduced mentoring circles to its 2008-2009 Mentoring Program.  Between January and June 2009, seventeen mentees are meeting monthly in three groups of five or six with the support and counsel of 19 Forum mentors, who rotate to each of the circles three at a time. The mentees organize and facilitate the sessions, and the circles have reported that their conversations have been rich with a diverse array of topics including design thinking, career development, networking and leadership.  During each circle, mentees also have the opportunity to raise specific issues of a more personal nature and seek counsel from the group.  What has been especially gratifying is that circle members have been learning from each other as well as from conversations with mentors.

The committee has asked that mentees be invited to our signature Forum events, and some attended the Holiday Dinner and others will be at the April Leadership Symposium and June Annual Meeting.  Please make it a priority to meet these wonderful women.

In June, there will be a mid-way get-together at which mentors and mentees will assess how the circles are doing and decide what direction to take in moving ahead for the second six months of the program.  We wish to thank Forum member Lori Greenawalt and  KPMG for their generous offer to host our get-together in June.

And a special thanks to our Forum members Elaine Mercier at Leadership Philadelphia, Judy Spires at Acme Markets and Sara Manzano-Diaz for Cozen O'Connor for hosting our three mentoring circles.  We couldn't run these circles as easily without their support.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE

The Program Committee, co-chaired by Stefanie Fine and Penny Ellison, has been busy planning The Forum's large, signature events as well as a variety of smaller, member-only programs.   The Holiday Party at the Please Touch Museum, graciously hosted by member Nancy Kolb, was delightful (especially the carousel rides), and our Annual Meeting, set for Tuesday, June 16, at The Water Works, overlooking the Schuylkill River and Boathouse Row, should be spectacular.   We will present The Forum Award for Emerging Women Leaders to the 2009 recipient that evening.

Our first Forum Foray, a delicious luncheon at Bliss restaurant in Center City, attracted 25 members, and our Foray Traditional High Tea at the Park Hyatt gave a dozen members the opportunity to enjoy each other's company and a wonderful "high tea" in an intimate, relaxing environment.   Over 28 members and guests gathered at the Philadelphia Theatre Company for a private buffet and wine reception,  a discussion with theater leadership and premiere of the play "At Home at the Zoo" by Edward Albee.

"Thought Salons" are the latest creation of the committee - discussions facilitated by dynamic discussion leaders on topics of value and interest to our members. If you have ideas for Thought Salon topics, know of discussion facilitators or would be willing to host a Thought Salon in your home, please contact Stefanie of Penny.

And what's coming next?   Look for news about a Spring Dinner Forum Foray and a summer golf outing!

PUBLIC SECTOR LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE

The Public Sector Leadership (PSL) Committee, co-chaired by Melissa Weiler Gerber and Carmen Paris, advances The Forum's mission through its Public Sector Speaker Series as follows:  By hosting bi-monthly conversations with influential members of the region's public sector, the committee fosters increased dialogue between Forum members and local leaders, enhances and expands members' ability to impact public policy decisions and introduces The Forum as a resource to public sector leaders.

In September, Lois Sherman Hagarty, Esq., partner at Saul Ewing and principal of CHH Partners, LLC., introduced Forum members to the world of lobbying.  In November, PSL featured an inspiring conversation with Forum members Dr. Arlene C. Ackerman, Superintendent of Schools for The School District of Philadelphia and Sandra Dungee Glenn, former Chairwoman of the School Reform Commission, about their vision for the future of Philadelphia's public schools.

January brought a lively discussion between Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey and District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham and our March meeting featured an intimate conversation with Blondell Reynolds Brown, Philadelphia Councilwoman At-Large and Marian B. Tasco, Philadelphia Councilwoman for the 9th District.

The PSL Committee and The Forum extend a special thanks to Forum member Wendy Beetlestone and Hangley Aronchick Segal & Pudlin for hosting our Public Sector Speaker Series.

SPONSORSHIP COMMITTEE

Lori Reiner, chair of the Sponsorship Committee, writes: "As a Past President of the Forum of Executive Women, I was excited to be appointed as the Chair of The Forum's Sponsorship Committee for 2008-2009.  Despite the beginning of the economic downturn, the Committee was successful reaching its goal for the fiscal year with the participation of long-time Forum sponsors combined with several new companies  that committed new support.  This was the first year that The Forum offered several different levels of Annual Sponsorship in addition to the event and table sponsorships for single-programs including the Leadership Breakfast, Holiday Dinner, Leadership Symposium and 2009 Annual Meeting (sponsorship levels still available!).

I have been working very closely with certain Forum Committee Chairs to develop a proactive approach toward Sponsorship that is aligned with our Forum's Mission.  I am also recruiting new members for the Committee, so please contact me!!  Sponsorship dollars are a vital aspect of  The Forum's budget each year.  Our Committee intends to do the bulk of its work in the Spring in order to have most of our Sponsorship commitments prior to the beginning of our next fiscal year starting on July 1."
