From the President

If you were at the April 18th Executive Suites program “Women Rising to the Top: Professional Opportunities and Challenges”, you know that these are exciting times at The Forum of Executive Women. We had a superb presentation by Carol Hymowitz, the Wall Street Journal’s editorial expert on women and leadership, who was the keynote speaker, and a panel with Denise Morrison, President of Campbell’s USA, and Anne Wilms, Chief Information Officer and Director of Human Resources at Rohm & Haas, speaking to a very large and enthusiastic Forum audience about the central issues of corporate leadership today. It was an absolutely marvelous morning, planned with great skill by Tricia Wellenbach and Dianne Semingson, and it characterizes so much else you’ll read about in this newsletter, like the Media Watch report and the successful conclusion of the mentoring pilot. Big things are happening at The Forum.

How do we manage to be so creative and successful as an organization? First and foremost, because so many of our members get involved in committees and in other ways to generate ideas that speak to our interests and needs, and then, make them happen, with all the hands-on involvement that requires. Second, we have a superb Executive Director, Sharon Hardy, and a great behind-the-scenes administrative support team, led by Jane Barr Pino. They make sure that the ideas get implemented, and that the infrastructure is created, to ensure that what we do is of the highest quality. One of the characteristics of The Forum is that we are never content to rest on our laurels. Currently, t he Strategic Marketing and Communications Committee, under the leadership of Robin Neifield and Grace Migliaccio, is gathering data from members to make recommendations to the Board for major improvements to the website; the Program Committee, under the leadership of Gloria Rabinowitz and Linda Galante, is shaping a very exciting 2006-2007 program year; and Jane Barr Pino’s staff is working on new tools for program registration on the web to make it easier and more convenient to participate in programs.

The Forum’s Board has just completed work on a Long Range Plan, which will be distributed on June 20 at the Annual Meeting, and which brings together the next steps for several important ideas and initiatives, just in time for our 30th Anniversary in 2007. You are at the center of all this thinking, planning and activity, so please don’t hesitate to send me, Sharon Hardy, or a committee chair an e-mail, or make a call if you have any thoughts on programs, the anniversary celebration, or anything else. We are successful because the smartest and best leaders in the region are the members of The Forum of Executive Women and they get involved, so if you haven’t, please do. — Sharon Smith

From the committees

Executive Suites

Executive Suites has accomplished a number of objectives in 2005-2006. Once again, a Women on Boards research report was published in the fall of 2005 through the hard work of a team of committee members led by Autumn Bayles and Margaret Sadler. Vicki Kramer and Beth Fitzsimons have been working closely with ION (InterOrganization Network) to broaden our initiative across the country to increase the number of women on boards. Milissa Tadeo has been interacting with a number of for-profit companies who have an interest in potentially adding women to their boards. Her work along with a few committee members is on-going. We have widened the referrals of these board openings to include other members within the ION network. Karen Kaufman, Jane Firth and Irene Hannan held a meeting in December with women currently serving on corporate boards to learn about the issues and challenges they face in the boardroom as well as enlist their help in our efforts. Finally, Tricia Wellenbach and Dianne Semingson organized the very successful April Program, Women Rising to the Top: Professional Opportunities and Challenges (speakers pictured to the right). We are looking for additional members who would be interested in joining one of our several subcommittees which focus on increasing the number of women on boards, including visiting public companies to educate and influence them about placing women on their boards. If you are interested, please email the Forum Office, and we will be in touch with you.

Membership

The Membership Committee, chaired by Jane Storero, experienced a great year, adding 20 new members to the Forum, bringing total membership to approximately 300 outstanding executive women. The committee continues to target and cultivate new members from corporations, non-profits and government, in cooperation with Executive Suites. The Membership Committee has held a series of networking breakfasts in Center City and the surrounding suburbs. As part of the “Meet the Forum” program, these breakfasts continue to be a popular way for members to exchange personal information. The committee also welcomed new members at a breakfast on May 18th to help them get acquainted with Forum initiatives.

Programming

Under the leadership of Nila Betof and Gloria Rabinowitz, the Mentoring Pilot Project kicked off in February 2005. The Forum partnered with the Professional Professional Women’s Roundtable and the Wharton Women’s Network. Eighteen mentoring pairs participated in the Project over the year term.

An evaluation was conducted by Dr. Monica McGrath of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania . Key discoveries included:

100 % of the participants believed that the Mentoring Program should be continued.

The Mentoring Initiative is a unique program not offered by other organizations in the Philadelphia region and is closely aligned with The Forum’s mission of advancing women leaders in the greater Philadelphia region.

In March, the Forum’s Board of Directors approved funding the continuation of the Mentoring Project for next year.

Sponsorship

The Sponsorship Committee, chaired by Patricia Wellenbach, has been steadily bringing in companies to support the Forum’s diverse initiatives. Please contact The Forum Office (info@foew.com) for opportunities to sponsor upcoming events. Special thanks to the companies who continue to offer ongoing support.

Strategic Marketing & Communications

The Strategic Marketing and Communications Committee, chaired by Robin Neifield and Grace Migliaccio, is pleased to announce the results of the Media Watch Study (see opposite page). As a follow-up to this study, members of the Media Watch committee, including Gloria Rabinowitz and Suzanne Mayes, met on May 9th with the Philadelphia Daily News editors at their request to share the research findings and participate in their daily morning news meeting.

The Committee is also launching a website redesign project and held a discovery meeting on April 25th to define the site features and functionality. Anticipated launch date of the new and improved website is fall/winter 2006. Improvements continue on this member newsletter thanks to Jody Levy and Forum News Editor Amy Hibler, and response to the PDF version has been positive.

Women, Policy & Politics

Following the success of last fall’s trip to Washington, D.C., to meet Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, as well as other active political figures, the Women, Policy and Politics Committee (WPPC) is working on a program for October 2006 that will provide an opportunity for the attendees to meet, and hear from, Pennsylvania’s 2006 Senatorial Candidates.

The WPPC, led by Margaret McCausland, is planning a number of initiatives to help women become more engaged in the political process and encourages any Forum members who would like to be a part of those initiatives to join the Committee. Please contact The Forum Office with interest.

Media Watch Report: Gender differences in local media

The Forum of Executive Women, in partnership with researchers from Temple University’s Department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media, recently completed its first Media Watch study to measure the frequency and quality of coverage for female versus male leaders in the Greater Philadelphia region. Dr. Betsy Leebron and Dr. Zizi Papacharissi of Temple University lead the research study under the Forum leadership of Strategic Marketing and Communications co-chairs Robin Neifield and Grace Migliaccio.

What was the methodology behind the research?
Empirical data was collected from four local newspapers, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Business Journal, and Camden County Courier-Post. The study included all articles published over a six-month period that referenced local business, non-profit, political and educational leaders. Focus group interviews with representatives from three of the four papers were also conducted to gather qualitative information. (The results of the study are available in Powerpoint format on The Forum’s website under the “Publications” heading. Please reference www.foew.com/press_main.asp for more information.)

What were the findings?
“The results were very positive,” reports Grace Migliaccio, “and we were also surprised to learn that the author’s gender is an important factor in determining the representation of women leaders.” While male journalists, male sources, and male leaders most often correlate to hard news stories, female journalists are more likely to cover soft news, but not necessarily use female sources in features. References to appearance, personal framing (as opposed to leadership framing), and mention of marriage/children are more frequent for female sources/leaders, but the discrepancy is very small.

What is The Forum doing to bring about change?
On March 31, 2006, members of the Forum shared the study results with managerial and editorial representatives of all four publications studied. The subsequent roundtable discussion paved the way for a continued open dialogue with the press and challenged editors to reconsider the way women are presented in the papers. Editorial response has been positive, as evidenced by a follow-up comment from Wendy Warren of the Daily News: “In fact, we’ve already used it (The Forum’s input), stripping out “what she was wearing” details when they added nothing to the story.” The Forum is partnering up with the media to exchange contacts and continue the discussion. Following suggestions by the press, The Forum is working to strengthen media ties by focusing on individual relationships with editors and reporters. The Forum will be inviting individual reporters to upcoming programs and has been compiling an “Expert Source List” of Forum Members who are willing to be the source for, or subject of, a news story.

What can Forum Members do to help?
The Forum encourages its membership to be active participants in reaching out to the media. As women leaders, you can help change public perception by cultivating strong relationships with individual reporters. Keep in mind that the press has observed that female sources are more likely than male sources to decline requests for interviews, decline to be quoted by name and failed to call back in a timely manner. A few suggestions for how you can effect change:

When contacted by a reporter, respond expeditiously and
volunteer your opinions and knowledge.

Be confident when sharing your expert point of view, and be willing to go on record. If you have not already done so, please join the Forum’s new “Expert Source List” by contacting the Forum Office at info@foew.com. Thank you for your support in advancing women leaders in our region by being part of this very important partnership with our local media.

Personal Story: “A Member Moment” by Rosalyn McPherson For months I had wrestled with what would be my next steps both personally and professionally. Feeling a professional restlessness, I had taken the ultimate risk and had resigned from my position at The Franklin Institute. My inner voice had let me know that I had done what I came to do, and it was time to move on. Because of my longing to return to the fast-paced Fortune 500 environment, I had actively searched for what I thought was my ideal position. I was finally going back to New York, the place where I had always felt alive and energized. Thanks to one of my Forum member buddies, I devoured a copy of Suzanne Braun Levine’s book, Reinventing the Rest of Our Lives: Women Entering Second Adulthood. I was definitely in the midst of transition. I soon discovered that I was not alone in this upheaval and that many women my age were having a similar experience.

So with all of these “goings on” in my backdrop, I donned a nice spring suit and headed for the National Constitution Center where the Annual Dinner was being held. From the moment I entered the door, the spirit of sisterhood was all around me – well-wishers, friends, people who I had not seen since leaving my job. As I shared my plans with a number of friends, I noticed the genuine disappointment at news of my impending departure.

At about 3a.m. the next morning, I sat straight up in my bed. Why would I give up the kind of network and support system that I had come to enjoy during my Philadelphia tenure? What I had experienced the night before was too real, not something to take for granted.

Within the next hour, clarity set in for me in a major way, and I know that it was definitely Divinely-inspired. I could have Philadelphia and New York and, more importantly, it was time for me to launch my business. I had successfully consulted for eight years back in the 80’s and I knew I would return to the entrepreneurial life. I was armed with a tremendous contact base and a vastly expanded experience. The next morning I called the lawyer and set the wheels in motion. Almost a year later, The ROZ Group, Inc. is enjoying healthy growth, and I am living in two of my favorite cities. I know that my membership in the Forum was pivotal in paving the way for an exciting new future, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

“A Member Moment” is a pilot run for a regular newsletter column. We invite you to share your personal stories with Forum News Editor, Amy Hibler, at amyhibler@yahoo.com. We would like to hear your lessons learned, words of wisdom or anecdotes about how the Forum has impacted you personally.
