FORUM NEWS  JUNE 2009

 June 2009

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Bankins

My dear Forum friends and colleagues:

I am writing to you with very mixed emotions.  It has been an interesting (not a dull moment) and fast-paced two years during which I have served as your leader of our wonderful organization, and so much has changed since I first stepped into the role of President.  In the past two years, The Forum has grown substantially both internally and externally, while significantly increasing the value proposition for our members.

Believe it or not, about this time two years ago, we were completing the contractual arrangements for the redesign of our website.  Today, our new website has gone through a series of updates and is the primary way that we communicate online with each other.  Thanks to all of our members who worked so hard to bring this effort from concept to reality.  I trust you agree that our website, today, is representative of the power of the organization.

A team of dedicated volunteers, assisted by our esteemed Executive Director, Sharon Hardy, and our Board have accomplished a great deal.  We began a new Annual Leadership Symposium that got rave reviews in 2008 and 2009.  Our organization reinvented our Public Sector Leadership Committee, under the direction of Melissa Weiler Gerber and Carmen Paris, attracting additional members to its new format and venue, and we created an Engagement Committee, under the leadership of Lesley Mallow Wendell and Afaf Meleis, to ensure that our members stayed engaged with The Forum.  By recruiting a new full-time Associate Director, Judy Grossman, who seamlessly and successfully supported our updated committee activities, we were able to introduce smaller venues, while continuing our larger venue Signature events and attracting more members.

Our Membership Committee, under the direction of Karen Buchholz, redesigned our "Fast-track" membership process attracting many more executive leaders, and our membership numbers today are higher as a result.  Last summer, the Board held a strategic planning session which included a number of select Forum members to examine and discuss the organization's mission and vision, resulting in a revised mission and vision that we all believe best represents our organization: Leveraging the power of executive women.

And, there is so much more that we accomplished in the past two years: too much to mention here!  My thanks to all of our committee chairs and members who worked so diligently to support all of The Forum's initiatives.   "Hats off" to The Forum Office whose staff, under the leadership of Jane Barr Pino, are to be applauded for making every interaction and event an absolutely pleasurable experience.  I am very excited about the new Board slate this year and I know that The Forum is in excellent hands for the future.  Margaret Mead, the U.S. anthropologist once said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."  My dear friends and colleagues, "thank you" for helping to change our world at The Forum; we added value and because of you and your commitment, we are in an excellent place in the world.

All the very best!

Elva

       FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Knowledge is power!  We are who we are because of YOU!

This is YOUR organization and we need your input as we strive to  "leverage the power of executive women."

During the past few months and as we move forward, we are taking advantage of that wonderful technology called "survey monkey," helping  us to capture information that will make us a stronger organization both to meet your needs and to help us have our voices heard.  We want to be sensitive to email and information overload and will try to keep these surveys to a minimum. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us.

Many of you, both new and long standing Forum members, have reached out to me to find out how you can become engaged in The Forum and to find out which committee or initiative is right for you.  I love these conversations and encourage calls and emails to get to know you and help you to get to know The Forum.

Thank you!

Sharon S. Hardy
Executive Director

Clout: A Force to be Reckoned With
by Forum Member Paulette Gabriel, PhD

The Forum's Leadership Symposium on April 22, 2009 brought to light an emerging and interesting way of thinking about leadership and power.  While the idea of power and influence have been at the center of how people get things done in organizations, clout represents a different way of engaging the resources needed to make things happen.  Exercising power in our day-to-day lives is nothing new - everyone uses it and some of us have been victimized by it.  But clout seems to be different -it isn't what you do but more of what you have.

Clout: Getting It, Using It and Passing It On was a huge success, especially since Forum members were able to gain insight into a source of personal and professional power many may have been overlooking.  The symposium feedback showed us that spending time on the subject of clout was worth it - over 90% of survey respondents said the symposium met their expectations, providing ways to  "better understand how I use mine," "explicitly mentor those around me to develop their clout" and "[develop] my list of 10 things to do to achieve clout and apply it almost instantly."  No doubt - clout is a relevant subject for today's world of work.

Clout: Three Chief Themes
The subject of clout was addressed from many differing perspectives:  The opening panel of high profile women who shared their differing roles and points of view; the four breakout groups with each addressing a different aspect: corporate clout, financial clout, gaining and growing clout and distinguishing one's clout; and the keynote speakers who discussed how women can impact the workplace as their clout grows.  The chief themes are powerful and remind us that we are at a pivotal point in the development of women as leaders, where the whole landscape is changing right here and now.  Shareholders have more clout in executive pay, groups of consumers exercise clout about what they want and swaths of voters who have been ignored in the past now have more clout than ever.  Clout is an important ingredient in these overall changes, and the following themes underscore what Forum members are saying and thinking about clout.

Clout is different than power.   Clout implies the ability to influence, but having clout is more related to how you are able to own and use power that you may not need or want to exercise authoritatively or dictatorially.  Instead, clout is a form of currency that enables action and seems to provide an almost centrifugal force around issues or situations that require attention and action.  So, when an individual or group is said to have clout, it means they are a force to be considered or reckoned with.  Compared to power, which can be used or abused and often comes with the territory, the role or the job title, clout is either earned or given and is usually situated in specific contexts.  For example, experts can have clout because of their extensive knowledge of a particular subject, groups can have clout because they are organized to take action and CIOs, as a particular example, can have clout because as more organizations are dependent on technology for their success, CIOs have more say.

Clout is founded in authenticity.    In the face of leadership that has failed us where the agenda was based on personal motives, clout as a guiding framework requires self awareness, confidence and assumes positive intent.  Clout comes from the perspective of others in some ways - they can see the integration of the inner and outer lives of those with clout. That understanding gets translated into a power that draws followership rather than demands it, that invokes shared commitment and that creates dynamism that is unlike authoritative power.  It all starts with the lessons we learn in our youth - in those first jobs and early in our careers that converge to form the "architecture" on which we are able to build. The lessons we draw from our experiences act as fuel for our development, giving personal meaning to how we enact literal and thought leadership - characteristics such as integrity, courage, strength, kindness and character.  Clarity about who you are, what you are able to do, what you care about and what values you are able to articulate to others becomes a foundation for drawing in the support of others.  This broadens the power base in ways that have a "pull" quality rather than a "push" quality - it is a foundation for building clout.

Clout can mobilize action.  Clout can be an individual trait or can characterize a group. In groups or communities, clout can be activated by an individual but can "spread," enabling a critical mass to also have clout. For example, in the latest election, the clout of the millennials, carefully nurtured by Barack Obama, made their presence known and felt like never before.  At the symposium, women discussed how to develop communities where clout can be nurtured and shared and the need to include other women in clout-sharing rituals. Those rituals, the "tribal dance," create an inclusive kind of membership in a group that has and shares organizational power, which can intentionally focus on creating a climate for women in organizations where clout is acknowledged, shared and used.  In other settings, we described how activism can be a lifeline for gaining clout - reaching out to others who have a shared need to get things done in support of a cause, thus creating clout as a collective with far more power than that of just one person.

Auditing for Clout: 5 Key Questions
Our members, like so many others, were not as concerned with all the theory regarding clout as they were interested in thinking through what getting, using and passing on clout meant to them.  As changing times are changing the way we look at power and influence, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:

1.      Have I owned the clout I have and what is it based on specifically?

2.     Have I challenged myself to take enough risks that enable me to use the clout I already have?

3.     Am I able to articulate who I am, what I stand for and what I care about in ways that enable me to exercise my clout?

4.     Have I reached out to other women leaders in my work and in my community to provide the support they need to develop their own clout?

5.     Have I exercised my clout across the universe of situations in which I find myself -  personally, leader to leader and across organizations and industries?

If you would like to share your views or comments on clout, please send them to The Forum at info@forumofexecutivewomen.com
