Forum News Fall 2009

  Fall 2009

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Ellen Toplin

Dear Forum Members:

Welcome back from your summer adventures. I trust that most of you are settling in to your fall schedules. As you do, I hope you are looking forward to participating in many of the wonderful initiatives and programs that The Forum has planned for our 2009 - 2010 fiscal year.

We kick things off with our 11th annual Leadership Breakfast on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at 7:30 a.m. at the Crystal Tea Room.  We are expecting more than 500 people to attend this year, when our featured speaker, Campbell's CEO Doug Conant, shares his perspectives about "Winning in the Workplace, Winning in the Marketplace and Winning with Women," and we officially release our 2009 Women on Boards report. (You can take a peek at my comments about this year's report by reading the letter that will appear in it.) Click here to read the letter.

Our committees are also working hard, planning how they will advance the three strategic initiatives that The Forum's board has identified as critical for us to achieve this year, as we strive to advance our mission of leveraging the power of executive women to expand the impact and influence of women leaders. For your information, we have charged ourselves this year with:

  • Aligning all activities of our committees and any special task forces with our mission and as a step towards our vision (which is that women and men share an equal voice and position in policy and decision making in all private and public entities)

  • Establishing and/or expanding The Forum's relationship with the most influential companies, organizations, public entities and groups in this region, as measured by our ability to:
    • Recruit these groups' senior-most women for membership
    • Cultivate them as sponsors
    • Work with them to identify emerging women leaders for our Mentoring Program
    • Encourage them to become involved in the conversation about the value of advancing women in governance

  • Creating strategic alliances with key groups that can help us leverage our impact and hasten our ability to achieve our mission

As a result, you will be hearing about some of our newer programs, including:

CEO CHATS: These will be a series of small group breakfast roundtables with the CEOs of some of our region's leading influential organizations. They will be open to Forum members only and limited to 20 people each. You can only attend one of these programs each year, so that a majority of our members have a chance to participate. Our first CEO Chat is scheduled for early November with Sunoco CEO (and Forum member) Lynn Elsenhans.  Watch your email for registration details.

ENGAGEMENT INDEX: You will hear more about the evolving work of our Engagement Committee as we begin a proactive planning process (which will begin with new members) that matches Forum opportunities with specific member interests which will be identified from an engagement index system we are creating.

WOMEN CORPORATE DIRECTORS ALLIANCE: Our Executive Suites Committee is also working to support the launch of a local chapter of Women Corporate Directors that could support our Suites' efforts.

Look for more information about some of our other plans, which include a Transitions Affinity Group and smaller thought salon meetings, in future letters from me and e-mails from The Forum.

Our members are an amazingly strong and supportive network of engaged business women who are doing wonders working collaboratively! If you have ideas, requests or questions, feel free to call me, any of our board members, our Executive Director, Sharon Hardy, or our Associate Director, Judy Grossman. We're here for you.

Take care,

Ellen Toplin

CALL FOR FORUM MENTORS

We are winding down our very successful 2009 Mentoring Program and beginning to recruit our mentees for our 2010 class. At the same time, we need to recruit more Forum mentors.

The Forum's Mentoring Program, in its fourth year, involves Forum members who serve as mentors for emerging women business leaders nominated by the Professional Women's Roundtable and area university-sponsored MBA women's organizations (such as the Wharton Women's Network and groups at Drexel, Temple and LaSalle).

The Mentoring Program runs from January to December.  From January to June, mentors and mentees meet in monthly circles that are held during the evening in Center City Philadelphia and the western suburbs.  Each mentor is asked to attend three circles over the six-month period. In June, mentors and mentees have a get-together to network and learn about the individual pairing component of the program.  During the fall months, mentor and mentee pairs are formed, and they meet monthly on an individual basis.  This year, everyone deemed the circles so successful that we are continuing both circles and one-on-one pairings through the end of the year.

To further describe the program, there will be an Orientation for new mentors and mentees on Tuesday evening, December 1.

Special thanks to Mentoring Committee Co-Chairs Lesley Mallow Wendell and Marlene Henkin for the hard work they bring to this program.

Please contact Judy Grossman judygrossman@forumofexecutivewomen.com or 484-231-1126 if you are interested in becoming a mentor or have questions.

FOOD AND FINANCE AFFINITY GROUP APPROACHING TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The Forum's "Food and Finance" Affinity Group is approaching its two-year anniversary and its greatest champion, Rachel Cohen, remembers when members of the Engagement Committee asked if she would spearhead this new Forum initiative. In agreeing to organize the get-togethers, Rachel, now Vice President and Wealth Advisor, Morgan Stanley, The Cohen & Sutcliff Group, saw a way to express her passion for women becoming more knowledgeable about all aspects of finance and feeling comfortable discussing such issues in a fun, informal setting.

Forum Affinity Groups are formed for the purpose of small group interaction and information exchange among Forum members with similar interests. What makes these groups particularly special is that they are led and coordinated by Forum members willing to take on this responsibility. The Engagement Committee oversees the creation of all Affinity Groups.

The Food and Finance Affinity Group, which meets in various members' homes,  makes for a comfortable atmosphere of open conversation.  There are 30 interested participants, and typically each meeting draws 10-12 of the committed members.  Generally they meet in the evening over a light dinner, but occasionally the participants get together over lunch. It is not an investment club, but rather a gathering during which conversations are topical, usually beginning with a discussion of current economic policy and financial news, and then drilling down to the effects on the individual.  Each member contributes to the discussion in her own way and shares her personal experiences to make the event both fun and interesting. The members have a very special connection and understanding of each other, which they treasure. Many members have commented that this group has exceeded their expectations!

The makeup of "Food and Finance" is varied, with participants from the legal, financial, marketing, human resources, and professional development fields, to name a few.  Forum members with all levels of financial knowledge participate and are welcomed.  The group, which typically meets quarterly, is open to any Forum member interested in "food and finance."

The next dinner will be in Center City on Tuesday, October 27. To learn more, go to The Forum's home page or contact Rachel at
rachelcohen2@comcast.net - 610-260-7385. If you are interested in attending, ask to be included on the email distribution list.  Members can also reach Rachel through The Forum's members-only LinkedIn group.

If you are interested in starting an Affinity Group,
please contact Denise Marbach, chair of the Engagement Committee, at
denise.c.marbach@us.pwc.com - 267-330-2205.

In our next Forum News, we will feature our "Dinner and a Book" Affinity Group.

 Forum Member Teresa Bryce
and Judge Annette Rizzo
Address Packed Audience at
September Public Sector Leadership Program

On September 21, 2009, at the first morning program of our 2010 Speaker Series, Teresa Bryce, President of Radian Guaranty, and the Honorable Annette M. Rizzo, Philadelphia Judge, Court of Common Pleas, discussed nationally acclaimed and innovative approaches by Philadelphia courts and businesses to solve the mortgage foreclosure crisis with a packed audience.

Judge Annette Rizzo was a key player in the development of the First Judicial Districts Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion pilot program, which requires that no residential owned or occupied property in Philadelphia may go to sheriff's sale without a conciliation conference being held. This requirement has kept many homeowners in their houses after a negotiating process between homeowners' lenders counsel and housing counselors.  Teresa Bryce, in her capacity as general counsel and then chief legal counsel, chief risk officer and President of Radian Guaranty, has been at the forefront of developing programs within Radian Guaranty to prevent mortgages from going to foreclosure in the first place.

The two women presented both public and private sector initiatives to help solve the mortgage crisis and illustrated admirably what can be done if know-how, passion and commitment are brought together to solve a systemic problem.

Thanks to Wendy Beetlestone and Diane Welsh for co-chairing the PSL Committee and organizing, with their committee members, these important conversations. The next in our 2010 Speaker Series will be on Thursday, November 19 (see above for details).

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 25 Forum members participated as mentors at the recent PA Governor's Conference for Women in their Mentor Match program. Thanks to our members' efforts, more than 140 attendees participated in a one-on-one mentoring conversation. According to conference staff, the attendees left with looks of renewed optimism and determination on their faces.

  • We will be posting a new online calendar of events, which will provide members a variety of features, on our home page soon. Stay tuned.

  • The Forum has our own LinkedIn group, with over 70 members to date and growing. (See box above.)

  • We held a social networking "discovery session" in September to ask members what they think The Forum's involvement should be in social networking. One of the suggestions was to offer training for interested members. The Program Committee is investigating this possibility.  Our thanks to Robin Neifield for hosting and facilitating our discovery session.
